"Golden Nugget" Reading Entry

After all the schooling we went to the last 2 years, we know almost everything we need to know about being a teacher right! I don't think so. I know now that I am facing graduating and getting a job, I just want someone to tell me exactly what I need to do as a beginning teacher! Well, guess what someone did and actually wrote this article!

I really enjoyed that this article took a question and answer role. Sometimes I feel like when I am sitting in class that I am barely processing the information to pass the class but not enough to fully understand what is happening and to ask questions. I mean I don't know enough about this field to ask in-depth questions. So, I really appreciated that this article was written because it took on the role of the questions that I didn't even think about asking. There they were: great questions and answers that apply not just to any teachers but teachers in OUR FIELD!!

The questions I really were drawn too were the portfolio questions and interviewing for a job. I mean those portfolios are such a tedious job and I know I am not the only out there wondering "WHY?" so it was nice to read that it can actually help a person get a job. And interviewing for a job: sure I have done this before but not for a CAREER!!! I mean those high school jobs are so meaningless. Who cares if you didn't get that job at McDonalds, some how you know you aren't going to be there for the rest of your life. Reading the answer to the question put me a bit at ease at the same time I was getting nervous just because I need to start on it soon.

Knowing how to prepare for my first day of teaching, was another question I would have never thought of but how great it was to read that before I had to face it and to know what I need to worry about and think of during my first week!!

I enjoyed reading this because it was such a relief to know that I have a resource I can go to when I start my 1st job of my career.

  1. I just met the co-author of this article, Dr. David Martin, last Tuesday. He was the Dean of College of Education at Gallaudet. A great man.

  2. I agree with you about the portfolios. They do take up a lot of time and like you I was reassured when I read that people do use for jobs. I asked my model teacher if she had to do a portfolio and she said that she did not. So guess it really depends on where you go. Let's just look at the bright side we will have it if we need and if we don't we can look at the accomplishments we had during graduate school :)

  3. I like having the portfolio for my own personal use. It will be nice to have all of my best work in one place so that I can find it to show samples if anyone asks to see that. I know that I don't keep the best records, nor am I the most organized person in the world, so this portfolio will be really good for me, I think. It is just taking forever to get together!!!
